Gentle Exfoliation: Why I Stopped Over-Exfoliating and My Skin Got Better
Published: June 20, 2026
A few years ago, I fell victim to the "tingle means it's working" myth. I was using a gritty face scrub in the morning, a strong glycolic acid toner at night, and a weekly chemical peel. I thought I was polishing my skin to perfection. Instead, my face was constantly red, tight, shiny (not in a good way), and breaking out more than ever.
I had completely destroyed my skin barrier. Here is the honest truth about exfoliation: your skin already knows how to shed dead skin cells. As we age, that process slows down, so a little help from exfoliants is great! But we are meant to gently assist the skin, not forcefully strip it away.
The Turning Point
When my skin hit rock bottom, I stopped all acids and scrubs cold turkey for a month. I only used water, a gentle cleanser, and barrier-repairing moisture. Once the redness subsided, I slowly reintroduced exfoliation—but this time, with a totally different mindset.
My New Rules for Exfoliation:
- Ditch the harsh physical scrubs: Crushed walnut shells and harsh beads can create micro-tears in the skin. If I want physical exfoliation, I just use a soft, damp washcloth.
- Switch to gentle chemical exfoliants: I swapped strong daily acids for a milder Lactic Acid or Mandelic Acid just twice a week.
- Never mix actives: If it’s my night to exfoliate, I skip the retinoids or Vitamin C. I let the exfoliant do its job without overwhelming my skin.
- Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate: After exfoliating, I immediately follow up with a soothing, hydrating layer. (This is exactly what The Daily Reset Serum was born for—giving the skin a giant drink of calming hydration post-cleanse).
If your skin is stinging when you apply your basic moisturizer, step away from the acids. Be kind to your face. Gently coax the glow out, don't scrub it out!
